"Over a third of all..."

  • Over a third of all the oil and gas consumed in the U.S. is used for food production
  • (from seed to plate).

  • The food on the average American plate traveled over 1500 miles to get there.

"“Estimates for total recoverable..."
  • “Estimates for total recoverable oil on our planet are about 2 trillion barrels.
On a cumulative basis, we have pumped out 1 trillion.”

Why Does It Matter – How it Affects Me…
  • 1 80,000 lb. truck = 45,000 lbs. of freight
  • 1 truck x 1 gallon of fuel = 5 miles average (up a shallow grade)
  • 1 person with 1 garden cart = 250 lbs/load/trip
  • 1 person could manage 20 miles/day or two loads/day     (5 miles there, 5 miles back and repeat)

  • Conclusion: to move 45,000 lbs., 5 miles up a shallow grade, 250 lbs. at a time = 90 days of work (3 full months, no days off)
  • (Note: 5 months if you add the weight of the truck.)

  • Economic growth
  • Human consumption
  • Industrial civilization
  • Human population?

“Throughout our country’s history, but increasingly over the past several generations:
  • We have depleted, but we have not replenished,
  • We have borrowed, but we have not repaid,
  • We have deferred investments critical to our long term survival, and
  • We have relied excessively on foreigners to subsidize our day-to-day existence.”
    - Chris Clugston, WakeUpAmerika.com

Consumption over last 100 Years
  • WE have used up about:
  • Half the topsoil
  • Half the oil
  • Half the rainforests
  • Third of all natural gas
  • Third of all coal

Goal of Permaculture Design
  • Reverses the CONSUMPTION model
             into a CREATION model.
  • Build the topsoil
  • Produce the energy we consume
  • Re-Grow the rainforests (and others)
  • Create sustainable communities and cities
  • Reverse global warming

“American Way of Life is non-negotiable” G.W.B.
  • “In truth, our representatives are doing exactly what we have elected them to do; they are attempting to maintain at any cost our American way of life—our distorted “reality” within which we can continue to live beyond our means and perpetuate our inflated lifestyles. They will do whatever they can on our behalf, as we do individually, to get us our next fix.”

  •    “Let ours be a time remembered
for the awakening of a new reverence for life,
the firm resolve to achieve sustainability,
    the quickening of the struggle
    for justice and peace,
and the joyful celebration of life.”
